Video signal shutdown just after bootup

Just after bootup, my Brother-in-laws computer monitor
loses the video signal, leaving a black screen. Same in
Safe Mode.
Please advise any ideas of problem

This is probably a hardware issue related to graphics mode switching, and
not a software issue.

Did you try another monitor?

It could be the graphics card (or onboard graphics chip) so try another
graphics card (nice to have a cheap PCI one around for emergencies, anyway).
