Video quality

I have succesfully recorded video to Movie Maker from a Sony Handycam thru the firewire port, but am shocked at the poor quality of the recording, versus what I watch directly on my Handycam. My idea was to put video from my camera to CD or DVD and save for posterity. I obviously have much to learn about doing this right. Where shall I go to start learning about the techniques, file choices, etc etc etc.

Also bear in mind if you are previewing the movie in MM, it is just this ...
a preview .... and not an indication of the finished quality. To test, make
a little movie and send back to the cam - if it has dvin - and then watch on
the tv, it should be the same.
