Video Problem During/After XP Install

Hi all,

I have a PC that has been running Windows 98SE for years with no problems at
all. It uses an Intel Desktop Board (D845PESV) with the latest BIOS
(5/2003). It has an ATI Radeon 7500 series AGP card with 64MB. I used
Ghost to make a backup of the 98 setup and then tried to install XP. The CD
I have has SP1 included. During the install process the screen just went
blank all of the sudden and after a couple of seconds the monitor turned off
as if I had powered down the PC. I reboot and continued the install but it
did this a couple of times at different points during the install. I tried
a couple of different monitors with no effect. I was able to finally get
through the install but now when I boot the problem occurs either shortly
after the XP splash screen or as soon as it prompts me for the admin
password. I have tried booting in VGA mode but with no effect. I have
restored the 98 setup and the monitor works fine again.
Anyone seen anything like this or have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your time and feedback,

Kevin

This sounds like an video driver problem, in your bios make sure you have
your video set to the agp interface functions, also it would be a good idea
to turn off any and all disk management software running in the bios and
other wise then try a clean install format the hard drive then put the
windows up disk in
If you have an update version of xp then your problem is with the video
driver.
Make sure to reset all setting in the bios to default.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the feedback.

I was thinking something video related as well.

As I mentioned the CD I used had SP1 included and the
folders were dated 8/2002. I remembered that I had
another older Windows XP CD I had used on another PC.
This CD was dated 8/2001 and did not have SP1 included.
I tried using it for the install and it worked
flawlessly! Not a single hitch and the PC is working
great two days later. Not sure it if was a "bum" CD or
if there was something in the SP1 files but at least it
is working!

Thanks,

Kevin
