video is elongated

When I download video from DV recorder using Moviemaker and then convert
it to an .avi file - it is always elongated and distorted, making the
people look fat. It never used to this.

When I view the video on my DV recorder, it looks normal, however.

Is there some way of stopping this?

Thanks!

DV-NTSC. My intentional is to ultimately burn it to a DVD. Doesn't WMV
have much lower video quality than AVI?

let's start with the original file.
Did you capture as a dv.avi file?
Is it 16.9 and you captured as 4.3 or vice versa?
Or set the project properties as one and captured as the other?

I have a DV camera and it records it in 4:3.

I use Moviemaker to capture it to my computer. That's when it seems to
become 16:9. It displays normally if I look at it while it's still on
tape, residing in my camera, but once an AVI file is captured, whenever
I view it in Media Player, it is elongated and seems to be trying to
display in 16:9. People look distorted, fat, and stubby. It doesn't look
natural.

Why does it do that?
