video game won't begin installation on new HP with vista

brand new laptop, HP Pavilion, purchased yesterday
when i put the game in, the compter doesnt read it and nothing happens
thought maybe the game was too old and not compatible with vista, tried to
install it using windows xp, but no luck

Plz help

Should we guess at what "the game" is or maybe you could enlighten us.

Lord of the Rings, Battle for Middle Earth
is the game, if that helps with my problem
