Video Display settings

Have a Medion Geforce 4 MX440 video display adapter, every time the computer
is started or rebooted it goes to 8bit color mode I then change to 16 or 32
bit and carry on with no prob. until I restart? Any ideas on how to stop
this. The system is a P4 2.8ghz 512mg ram Win XP home.

When you make these changes do you hit the Apply button then the OK button?
 
Yes I do Kevin it really almost seems that the video is starting in safe mode
but nothing else is?
