Video Conferncing - Suddenly Not Working

Video conferencing was working fine thru MSN Messenger for
months via a cable modem and Belkins router. Then I began
having internet connection problems, where I was
constantly losing connection and thus the video conference
would close. My ISP upgraded my cable modem twice since
then and insists there is no signal or line problem. So I
switched to Linksys router, which helped (but didn't fully
stop) the frequent loss of internet connectivity. However,
the web cam no longer works. Both the Belkins and Linksys
use NAT firewalls; I'm not sure why one worked and the
other didn't. I am reluctant to open ports on my Linksys
and possibly make my computer vulnerable; that's why I use
a router to begin with, for the firewall protection. I
have upgraded firmware on both routers. I've checked all
the XP firewall, QoS scheduler, etc. things. Does anyone
know why 1) the Belkins suddenly started losing internet
connection or 2) what router definintely works with MSN
Video conferencing without having to disable the firewall?
Thank you.

maybe the belkins had UPnP and the Linksys doesn't.
messenger use UPnP to traverse a NAT for video/audio/file transfer
