The question you need to answer is: what program installed these codecs and
is this program still installed so, therefore, do I need any and all of
these codecs? (We have no idea as to what you may need today and in the
future.)

Ok thanks Jerry, maybe best to just leave them all.

Sometimes I have several versions of the same codec, eg Xvid, wmv,
etc, but with only 4 letter codes they sometimes overwrite each other,
apparently 8 letter codes are available on some OS's other than
Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, MacX, and Unix, so maybe even more
versions of the same codec can exist on those PC's ?

Problem seems to be sometimes a video encoded with an old version
of a codec will not play correctly using a newer version of the same
codec, hence 5 versions of some codecs are still needed.

The fourCC code is a unique identifier for a codec bitstream. The 1.5+
million options here haven't been exhausted - I believe there are less than
600 video codecs out there.

The source of your problem is that people should not be reusing the same
fourCC for incompatible codecs. "DivX" is a horrible umbrella for a ton of
content that may or may not be handled by any given decoder. I'm imagining
that that's what you're having trouble with, since the development processes
there have been stunningly disconcerted and backwards over the years. =\

zachd, thank you for your reply.

Oh ! so 4 letter codes are not the problem, if everyone did the correct
think, and not keep using the same letter combination all the time, thanks

Zach, thank you for you reply.

Ah ! so the problem is not with just having only 4 letter codes, but that
people are reusing the same codes incorrectly.

Thanks
