If your current graphics card is "very old", are you sure that you can use a
PCI-Express card? (It's entirely different from PCI; physically
incompatible.) Most of the cards I've seen that required a separate power
connection were PCI-E, but some were AGP.

What's your motherboard (or system)?

What is your main application? 1 GB of video RAM is mainly of use for 3D
stuff, with high resolution monitors. I'm not sure that there's much to be
gained by having a huge amount of VRAM with a card that isn't a "super-do"
one.
