Video Card connection

Hello,

I recently needed to replace my hard drive. A friend helped me, and during
the process I noticed he connected the ribbon from the motherboard directly
to the hard drive. However, the old configuration, I believe, had the ribbon
cable connected to the hard drive and the video card. With my current
set-up, I do not have any cable connected to the video card [ ATI Radeon].

This is causing some problems with the overall PC operation, including not
shutting down. It just re-boots. Because of this, I unchecked the
"Automatically Reboot" option. Then when I attempt a shutdown, I receive the
BSOD. Within this screen, it refers to an ATI3duag.dll, which leads me to
believe it has something to do with my video card not connected.

Can anyone please tell me how to properly connect my ribbon cables to the
hard drive along with the video card?

You might be talking about the auxiliary power cable to the video
card. Some video cards require a power lead/wire/cable connection to
the power supply. That connector might be on the same power cable
that goes to the hard drive.

The reason I mentioned the ribbon cable connecting to the video card and the
hard drive stems from a recent hard drive problem I had. Now I don't know
what to do. I'll try to give the short version of a long process.
I recently had a friend help me install a new hard drive, during this
process, as he took the old one out, it had a cable that went from the video
card and the hard drive along the same ribbon. When he installed the new
hard drive, he did not connect that card / board which I believe is the
video card.

Now, my reasoning behind all of this is from the problems I have been
receiving since this installation.

1) When I restart my PC, I always get a dialog box message that refers to an
ATI.dll missing.

2) My system (Windows 2000 pro) will not allow me to completely "Shutdown".
When I attempt shutdown, it will only reboot, however; prior to rebooting, I
get the BSOD, with a message that again refers to ATI3duag.dll.

So all of these messages that relate to the ATI video card lead me to
believe my new hard drive was not connected properly.

I don't want to go on with this and confuse you even further, I don't really
know how else to describe this. hopefully you can decipher my rambling.

Apparently that's something you could do better by posting in
context. In other words, ask a question after the part(s) of a reply
you don't understand. It makes for very clear communications and
sets USENET apart from other technical help forums.

A video card is never connected by a data cable to a hard drive.

A video card and a hard drive can share a power cable coming from
the power supply, extended with different connectors.

Again, what is your exact video card?

This is a power cable. It is sometimes referred to as a "Molex" 1x4 connector.
It powers the hard drive and some video cards use this connector, on the end
of the video card. You can use the same power cable and two Molex connectors,
to power a hard drive and also power the end connector on the video card.

This is a ribbon cable. It connects a hard drive or an optical drive, to the
motherboard. It does not go to the video card. The video card has no connector
for it.

With those terminology issues out of the way...

Maybe you changed ATI Catalyst drivers for your AGP video card, and that is
why you are having problems ? Try a search engine, and read a few threads about
"ATI3duag.dll". Reverting to an older Catalyst driver, might fix the problems.
To understand which version to use, don't use a version which is any
earlier, than the version provided on the video card install CD. If you
do, it might break things.
