Video capture device was not dected.

My son has taken over my six year old Dell computer. The computer came with
Windows XP installed, so it has Windows Movie Maker. We are trying to use
movie maker to send some short videos via email. When we try to upload to the
program we get an error "Video capture device was not detected". All software
has been installed and during that installation the icon of "new hardware
found" came up. Any advice on how to make movie maker recognize the
camcorder, by the way it is a Panasonic if that makes any difference. Or does
anyone know of an inexpensive program that would allow us to capture and
email video.
