VHS to VCD/DVD

Dear All,
I want to convert some of my old VHS tapes to VCD or if possible to DVD,
does anyone knows the hardware and software needed or any online guide to
that? I have a AMD Athlon 64 PC with 512 DDRAM and a Samsung DVD Burner.

I use a Pinnacle Firewire MovieBox and Pinnacle Studio 8 software and it
works great. Check out TigerDirect.com, they have lots of pretty good
video hardware.

Thanks for recommanding the Microsoft Analog Recorder, but is there any free
stuff since I am in a Third World country and do not have a credit card to
make such purchase?
On the other hand I understand this is for audio tapes, does it work for VHS
tapes?

In my opinion forget all that XP nonsense to do any converting, unless
you want to, as I will not push MS products or the OS's capabilities as
I don't use it, never have never will, and, I also don't know how so I
can't instruct.
What you need is a good Video card capable of inputing RCA/SVideo input
jacks.....and a good capturing program......I have used Cyberlinks
PowerVCR to do mine & they came out excellent & clean, it has the option
for VCD/SVCD or straight DVD formats PAL/NTSC etc. After it's recorded
to one large mpeg you have to use an authoring program to convert it to
the standard DVD structure, than use a burning program that burns
DVD's.............

I just bought Pinnacle Studio 9 for $75 and made a BUNCH of DVD's and
SVCD's using it - as long as you have a video input port on your card you
can use it. Was simple and painless.

No. And it's not particularly good at audio tapes IMO.

Good luck on finding any freeware that does what you want.
Converting video tape to VCD/DVD format is a very software
intensive task and I'd be surprised if someone were to write
a program that did it well and then handed it out for free.
(But then the internet is full of surprises.)
