Very strange Vista behaviour after 9th Jan '08 Vista update

M

Mr.JP

I'm running Vista home basic on a Toshiba L40 laptop, brand new laptop with
new Vista install, I've just run the automatic update tonight (9th Jan) which
installed the following updates;
KB905866
KB941644
KB890830
KB943302
KB943899
KB943411
MS Office '07 Service Pack (SP1)
As well as some Intel updates for the integral wireless cards.

As soon as the updates were installed my display started flashing rather
sporadically, it then changed resolution and between all that I got flashes
of what can only be described as black "smiley skulls", it happened twice and
it seemed Vista was having difficulty automatically restarted after the
updates installed.

If anyone else knows anything about this problem or has also encountered it
please let me know, if this isn't the right place to ask, please redirect me.

Many thanks,

Mr.JP

I just downloaded the same updates as you did, today Jan, 9th. The only
updates i did not get were for my wireless card. My computer has not shown
any unusual behavior. Maybe the wireless card updates are causing you the
problem?

I did an update, the system rebooted and I saw a blank screen. Manually
powered down, restarted then everything turned out OK.

Is your antivirus software up to date?

I updated and got the BSOD. Had to do a system repair. I fear MS really
screwed up on this one.

I got the same thing last night for Vista Home, during shutdown after patch,
I got a BSOD on some kernal inpage something or other and it tried to boot
once, failed miserably and then was unable to reboot to that drive at all (I
have a 2nd drive with REDHAT on it that the bios went right to). I gave up
frustrated and went to bed b4 trying a hard power cycle...

EXCELLENT Rob!! All it took was to completely power down (pulled the plug
and waited a bit - but that might not be necessary) and start it back up
again...

Very strange patch

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

I have Mandrake on another partition, it worked great. Now I am going to
try the updates again and power down completely and see if that works,

For the record, I had EXACTLY the same experience on my desktop including the
mouse problem, followed by no monitor and OK after third restart.

Wasted over an hour of time on this. There is a real problem with this
latest update!

Ive had the same problem. Im in step with updates on a daily basis. I
received auto updates released on the 9th and my computer 'hung'
"Shutting down ...". I left it 3 hours and forced power off. It booted
ok and presented a message 'configuring updates ...' before presenting
log on screen. I ran a system restore (back to 6th) to unwind these
and start again. I downloaded updates using Vista Windows Update
and ... same problem. THis time I left it overnight, still no
movement. I've just powered off and back on again and it seems to have
installed the updates. Goodness knows what my registry looks like
now ...

Any more info on this anyone?

I also had the exact same problems that started right after this last
microsoft updates. The system seems to be unable to apply KB943899. Any
solution for it?

Looked at my update history and saw that the KB943899 update was installed
successfully. My approach is to be informed of updates and to install them
myself. I then install only one or two at a time (depending on the size).
That way I don't let the machine take over for long periods of time and if
an update gives me trouble then at least I know which one and can use System
Restore as a backup to help fix the problem.

after my computer downloaded the update, it restarted ok, but the next
time i tried to start up from being completely off, just before the
desktop normally appears, the screen went blank for about 3 minutes with
no messages on it, before the desktop finally appeared.  the next time I
started the computer, i got the intel screen which i normally get
immediately after turning on the computer, but nothing else happened, it
didn't appear to even try to load windows and didn't want to boot from a
cd either so i had to switch it off by holding the power button in.
i've tried again to startup the computer, but this time left it on the
intel screen for a while to see what happened, and after about 25
minutes or so it finally started to load windows, and now it does this
every time i turn on the computer.

could this be related to the updates, or is that something of a red
herring, and could this be some kind of hardware problem?

just one final note, once the computer finally loads windows,
everything seems to work properly but it just takes around 25-30 minutes
before it begins to load windows

This is infuriating. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and my computer is
brought to a halt while idoling. I checked task manager and the Kernel
keeps thunking CPU_0.

Someone should call MS. My PC is bearly usable.

I get exactly the same thing.

Dell Vostro 1400.

After installing those updates and restarting i get blue screen with
(i think) the following details from the event log.

There was error [DATABASE OPEN FAILED] processing the driver database.

I've managed to revert the system back to a previous point using the
repair disk.

I have tried to apply these updates twice, and exactly the same thing
happened. I'm now giving up until hopefully there is some kind of
resolution - this means i wont be able to apply windows updates!!

one p*ssed off vista user.

I get exactly the same thing.

one p*ssed off vista user.

My Hp wouldn't even boot after the install. After startup repair I did get
to the desktop, but nothing worked except the mouse, then everything froze.
I spent 1.5 days in "Vista Hell" before I bit the bullet and did a full
recovery. I did have my data backed up, and the recovery disk didn't redo
the complete hard drive, just the C: partition. So now I just have to
reinstall any programs I added and restore a few things to the C: drive.

Allmost all the time I have problems after automatic update of my vista home
premium. I also found out that it is better to install the updates by myself,
but unfortunately I forgot yesterday morning (11/jan) and when a programm I
just installed wanted to restart the windows download/upgrade did the same.
Result: I'm on my old pc with XP and allready googling for 10 hours to find a
solution because vista will not start up. It starts to boot but arriving at
crcdisk.sys it freezes. I think I have to repair but since I bought an Acer
system (first and last time) I do not have dvd/cd's for my (oem
pre-installed) vista.
Does anytone of you have suggestions about what to do?

It can stop at on crcdisk.sys for several minutes. I would wait 4 or 5
minutes.

But then it may be because it can't go anyfurther.

Thanks, but no, it won't go any further. I'll try again tomorrow, it's 4
o'clock in the morning at my side of the world... I've had it, why had I to
change to vista, I had better stayed with xp!

when i had a problem with it hanging on crcdisk.sys i discovered i
actually had a bad harddisk sector.

mines a dell, and i was able to go into the dell repair app, which
analysed it as a bad sector. Not saying your problem is - but mightb e
worth a check
