very strange (kinda long)

i used my computer the other night with no problems, went to bed and
discovered in the morning that i couldn't connect to the internet. i soon
discovered that my desktop dial-up shortcuts led to nothing. my established
internet connections had vanished, completely, from the control panel
"network connections."

i immediately ran a full AVG 7 (paid) scan and it didn't discover a virus,
but noted that about a dozen files had "changed" and wanted to quarantine
them. i left the files alone. i then scanned the system with trend micro's
web scan and it reported no problems. i then installed NAV 2003, updated it
and performed a full scan with no problems found. same with a full scan by
trojan hunter.

what the heck just happened? does this make any sense? oh, btw, i've been
connecting to the internet temporarily through AOL with no problem. what
happened to my normal dial-up connections and what's with the weird reports
from AVG?

Did you record the names of the files that AVG flagged as having changed?
Maybe there's a clue there? Maybe not.
You don't say what op sys you have, but I did a google on "network
connections disappear" and this is *one* of the
links I found:
http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBN/tip6500/rh6523.htm

Good luck.

thank you for the links and the effort, folks.

i'm using winxp home, but i'm about to receive shipment of xp pro and
perform a clean install; so i'm prepared to just relegate this experience as
some sort of weird abberation -- like an UFO abduction or something. :)

i was just wondering if these symptoms were known with the recent spate of
worms and security vulnerabilities. i guess not. my main dilemma now is
figuring out which AV program to go with on my soon-to-be freshly installed
system. but i'm gonna start a new thread to take a poll on that issue. ;)

Chnaces ar that you've been hacked. Once you've done a full reinstall, make
sure you install a firewall as well. I personally prefer a hardware firewall
(NAT/Router) (e.g. Linksys), but a software firewall like ZoneAlarm works
well.
