I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 with XP Home. It has recently developed a
symptom of starting EXTREMELY slowly. I get to the blue screen that just
says welcome on it, hear the Windows Jingle, then the machine just sits
there with the odd bit of HD noise for at least a minute (which feels like
forever!) before the desktop appears. This has only just started to occur
after a year or so of use.

go start -> run -> type msconfig -> start up tab -> all processes in this tab are not windows related so try clean this up a bit. hit ctrl+alt+delete go processes tab and see how much is running and in the performance tab check that u have plenty of physical memory and virtual memory (page file) free
