Very Slow To Select Printer

I have a number of printers on my home office network, running XP Pro. Two
are networked and the other two are parallel port.
Everything works, but lately it seems like when I select a printer from the
application (MS Word, Excel, etc. and QB 2007) it take forever to load the
driver and get itself ready to print. Printing seems normal, but the software
set up time seem much longer that before.
Any ideas as to what may be going on would greatly be appreciated.

I'm having the same problem, but I get strange character all over and it
print 12 pages some time. I uninstall the printer to let Xp Pro rediscover my
HP 5L printer but that didn't do any thing It is still slow and printing
character again. I think it's do to one of windows updates that did it. I'm
running two systems both to have the same problem after the updates was
applied.

You can try this site it seemed to help me one time before. However, I think
one could get into trouble there as well. I am NOT an expert!!
