VERY slow start on BRANDnew XPpro

I have a new "top of the line", supposedly very fast Dell Inspiron 8500 with
completely new XP pro on it. Soon as I got it I downloaded all important
hotfixes and stuff from Windows Update.
"winver" now shows: version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp2.034022-1633:Service Pack
1)
P-4 2.2 GHz Processor, 512 MB RAM

I start the machine and this happens: within what I guess "normal" time
desktop icons and taskbar appear, but then it takes too long until the
MS-sound comes thru the speakers and it again takes "forever" until the
network connection and Norton AV symbols appear.

I just did another Windows Update and it didn't help.

PLEASE any ideas? this is VERY frustrating!
Thanks
Peter

Define "normal" and "forever". If you are having NAV do a complete scan when
you boot it is going to take several minutes for it to complete the scan.
Set NAV to not scan on boot and compare the startup times.

Google "bootvis.exe" and give it a try.

In my experience, the fastest, most stable XP experience (no pun intended)
is the clean install. The security patches are necessary, but seem IMO to
take a toll on performance.

YMMV.

Thanks Steve, your tip about NAV lead me into the right direction and I
could resolve the issue
Appreciate it!
