Very Slow Right Click Response

When I right click a desktop icon or an icon on a toolbar on my desktop
bar, it takes up to 10 seconds for the context menu to appear. This is a
new phenomenon, but I'm not sure when it began. Can anyone help me speed
this up (it used to be instant) or tell me why it may have slowed down?

I am using Windows XP Pro SP-1.
