Excel Very slow Excel 97 startup

Dell D830 Latitude laptop
Windows XP Pro with SP2
McAfee virus protection software
Internet connection via company network
4 GB RAM
2.2 gig Intel Core 2 Duo
Main board = Dell Inc OUY141

If I click on an xls file it takes around 30 seconds to open the file completely. However, if I start Excel 97 first and then open an Excel file from within Excel 97 using the Open command the file opens immediately.

Can anyone help explain what my problem is?

If your on a company network, why not ask them company techies to help, that's what they are their for!

Already done that but no success to date so I thought I would ask for help from outside.

Why the concern..? I have just done what you describe in your post on 4 different computers and the times range between 10 seconds and 30 seconds to open..So i'd say its about normal..
