Start by uninstalling the stuff that Dell installed on the system.

I installed Windows Vista on a Core Solo 1.2Ghz CPU last week, with an
extremely slow 4800 RPM 1.8 inch drive and it really flies, much faster than
I was expecting.

Hi,

Before uninstalling anything, you may want to turn off Windows Aero, and
change your thme to Vista Basic mode. This can and will enhance your
computer's performance (Right-click the desktop->personalize->Windows colors
and appearance->more options->select Vista basic theme).

If nothing else works, restart your computer into safe mode (F8 before
windows boots), then restart your system in normal mode.

I hope this helps. I do not believe uninstalling factory installed software
from your computer manufacturer is needed. Good luck.

Hi the best thing to do is to send the machione back to dell and insist on XP
being installed or buying XP PRO and UPGRADING your dell to an operating
system which works

I don't think so, I already have 4GB and 3200 CPU and vista is still steam
driven even in the most basic of modes which makes me think that what is the
point, XP works is proven has drivers which work for pritty much

Mark,

It seems apparent, judging by your numerous posts trashing Vista, that
you are having problems getting your Vista OS to perform correctly. Why
don't you drop the negativism and ask someone in these discussion groups for
help solving your problems?

Mark,

I think you should drop your continuous and unabated criticisms of
Vista and seek the assistance of knowledgeable people. When you do nothing
but trash the OS you are having problems mastering, you are putting yourself
in the position whereby nobody is going to want to help you overcome your
problems.
I genuinely feel that once you understand Vista and how to use it you
will be extremely pleased with the results. Your manner of comments is akin
to eating in a restaurant and then telling the waiter the food "tastes like
shit". Do you expect them to help you in any way? Do you expect them to want
you to return in the future?
Why are you having problems? What problems are you having? You should
start by telling us when you bought your system and whether or not Vista was
preinstalled on it, what version of Vista it is, whether or not your
computer still contains all the crapware that came with it, whether or not
you have upgraded from the factory OS and if so did you do an upgrade or
clean install, how many drives you have and how they are formatted and a
list of all the hardware and software installed on your system, including
the version numbers, etc, etc, etc.
Is all your software Vista compatible? Have you loaded all the newest
drivers? What's your pagefile size? Is your processor single core, dual core
or quad core? Which applications start at bootup? Do you have any security
software that is interfering with your system? Do you have any "maintenance"
or "cleaner" software interfering with your system? Do you have multiple
anti-spy or antivirus programs running at the same time, and if so are they
all running "real time" protection? Do you have any malware infections on
your system?
The list could go on and on and on and on. The more knowledgeable
people in these discussion groups can solve just about all your problems if
you politely ask them for help and provide the necessary details they need
in order to troubleshoot your problems.

Hi CB,
My original Post was to Amit Lohia who was asking how to speed up a machine,
in my experience the only way to speed up a Vista machine is to Upgrade it to
XP because of the various reasons I have given, I put it ot you that if you
bought what you thought was your dream car to fined that it was substandard
useless rubbish what would you do - recommend it - I think not!!

The reason for theses threads is to let people know what is good and what is
bad and unfortunatley Vista is bad VERY bad.

Mark, it would then seem that your experience is very
limited. If you would like some help in correcting the
problem(s) you are having you could post the pertinent
information here and I'm sure help would be forthcoming.

Well, if it was a standard transmission and you kept trying
to pull away in high gear without knowing any better I'm
sure you'd feel that way. Asking someone to explain why
you're having this trouble would, I'm sure, change your mind
about it being useless rubbish.

In my experience, Vista is good, VERY good. Been running it
since 30 Jan '07, and have yet to see a blue screen on any
of my computers. Yes, there is a learning curve with it, but
that is the same as with any OS.

My experience is with Vista the ram needs to be at least 1 GB and 2 GB is
better.

Using Ramboost also helps but 1gb hard wired ram is minimum.

Whoever sold a Vista machine with 512 RAM set you up for problems.

Like watching a color TV show with a black and white TV.

Vista works fine for me and most hiccups I have experienced are user caused:
me being the user.

I have experienced the same problem and I understand Mark's frustration.
It is entirely irritating to have to "fix" and "tweak" a system that
should have had enough time, money and development behind it to be ready
for the consumer. It is not in any way acceptable by my standards so
far... other than it looks a little more "shiny" than XP and Win 98.
That in no way justifies the use of ten times more space and sluggish
performance with access to 4 times the memory.

I am ready to "reverse upgrade to XP" myself. My debate is that it will
most likely void my Toshiba warranty on my brand new and very nice
laptop. My only difficulty so far with a 2+Ghz Dual core, 2Gb machine -
Microsoft Vista.

C.B. has a reasonable and intelligent response as his experience is
good - totally positive for whatever parameters he is working with. I,
on the other hand have seen none of the wonderful benefits or advantages
of Vista. In point of fact, it has only served to anger and frustrate me
with its continued pointlessness. I find that has far too many useless
features, wasted space and applications, intrusive behavior, and runs
far slower (on a technically faster machine) than XP.

My opninion so far is that I have wasted vast amounts of time and hard
earned cash on a new laptop to be not only disappointed with it's
performance using Vista but to be astronomically irritated with the
"Catch 22 telephone service tree like" adventure of trying to make vista
perform better and remove elements that I will never use only to have
them magically re-appear or have access denied during deletion.

I seem to be forced to have and store programs and "upgrades" I don't
want and will never use on hard drive space I have paid for and would
like to utilize for purposes other than being a Microsoft drone. I am
also forced to let windows "optimize" things I don't want it to.

The whole experience is like having a friend that loves accessories and
silly gadgets and knows just enough about computers to cause problems,
sit alone with your machine with total control while trying to "help"
you customize things to their strange and moronic standards by tossing
in every useless goody they can find and implement - Not because they
should... because they can.

My experience in the month that I've owned Vista is that it's a piss
poor frustrating exercise in uselessness, blended with an extreme
version of annoyance... all topped with a gleaming fake plastic glowing
flashy jewel - and you will like it, because they told you so, and there
are no other alternatives. Here is your highly polished beautiful chrome
turd - Now eat it.

I am trying however, to keep an open mind and some hope the I can
somehow modify or use this nice new shiny but worthless tool to my
advantage. I'm looking at you guys for some help.

Thank you for your time,

Shock

One simple thing that will speed up your system is to turn off indexing.
When you turn it off it will take a few minutes to complete but after that
your system runs much faster.

Hi Shock System, if you contact Toshiba and request XP drivers for your model
you will probabley find that they are more than willing to assist you.
Installing from a full XP Pro disk rather than an upgrade disk might install
generic drivers for you so that you can get on the web and download direct
the manufacturas drivers if the ones on your D drive (normaly set up with
drivers).

The main systems I upgrade to XP have been Dell's (I have done some toshibas
as well) their first emails when contacted, say that some drivers won't work
but when pressed as to what won't work or which drivers are needed for XP the
resulting email says that there is no problem with drivers and as an added
bonus the warrenty is not effected as you will just have to use the rescue
disk to get back to prove the hardware. another way is to get a second HDD to
replace the one which came with the machine and load XP to that, that way it
only take minuites to go back, and with the costs of HDD so low now it would
be the best way to upgrade with regards to warranty concearns.

i wish you well if you decide to do the above and unlease the full power of
your laptop
