Very slow browsing after installing SP4

I've tried to install SP4 on my desktop computer twice
now, once back in Feb., and once today.

Each time, internet browsing, whether using IE or Opera,
slows to a crawl even though I have a 300 kbps cable modem
connection.

After uninstalling SP4, the speed improves again
to "normal".

I've browsed through the MS Knowledge Base, here in this
forum, and elsewhere on the WWW. Apparently others have
experienced this problem, but I have yet to track down
anything that obviously states the cause(s) or any
fixes/workarounds.

I don't want to stop updating my OS and potentially leave
my pc vulnerable to exploits. Is there some fix available
that I haven't been able to track down?

I have no problem with sp4. Do a Google search on
internet speed + windows 2000, you will find a lot of
info, eg the following:

One further point, don't trust the software solutions.

I have found a few more useful sites on registry
modifications:

If you decide to try that, may I suggest that you change
the registry keys one at a time to see the effect of the
change.

Thank you for the suggestions, but I'm not really looking
to tweak my system to improve performance. I'm only
looking to get SP4 installed without it killing
performance. If editing the registry after install is the
only way to do it, then I'm willing to do so, but I'd
rather know what is done by installing SP4 that might be
killing it it the first place.
