Very High CPU Usage

I just installed Windows Vista Beta 2 and found it totally unusable because
the CPU utilization is at 100% at the desktop without doing anything. It
takes an agonizingly long time to do anything else because all the CPU is
already being used.

I'm running on an Intel 2.8Ghz Pentium D 820, with 1GB of Memory.

I'm not able to explore the new features of Vista because it's virtually
impossible to do anything with the CPU at 100%.

So far from suggestions I've seen I've turned off sidebar and stopped the
search and defender services, still a problem, as most people have noted it's
explorer.exe consuming most of the CPU.

Hmmm, on my laptop, co-incidentally after installing Trend PC-Cillin
Anti-virus my processor was at 100% on start-up for like 5 min, then
eventually it did come down lol.

Desktop, only 2 GHz (the one I installed it on anyways) and a pretty nice
ATi 9800 SE graphics card, runs very well actually :)

try and start task manager and see if defrag.exe is running (look in
processes) because it will run on first start up on new install.

I have the same problem only it is sporadic. It seems like it always happens,
and yet it does quiet down at certain times, but no pattern to it. I tried to
find the culprit, whether it is my Virus scanner, auto defrag, indexing....I
know it’s not any of those three from disabling them and trying it out. I
heard the later builds after Beta 2 (Public) are not as bad.

Hello,

I have the same problem. It just started happening recently, and it is
explorer.exe using 100% processor continuously.

I have no idea what is causing it, but here's how I made it bearable:

- Right-click an empty part of the taskbar and click Task Manager
- Click Processes tab
- Fine the explorer.exe process with 100% usage
- Right-click it, click Set Priority, and click Below Normal

I have to do this every time I start my computer, and so far, everything
works just like it used to. (It still uses alot of processor, but no longer
lags the system)

Such are the consequences of beta testing :)

Wow...you have to set the priority for explorer.exe down? THAT'S
interesting...lol

You should write a utility to do that for you on startup. (Or someone who's
into coding should...I hate coding anymore, they've made it way to
easy...lol)

Yea... pretty freaky. I was afraid it would make things worse, but believe
it or not, it makes things work fine. Maybe the Vista scheduler is more
intelligent than XP's ... guess I will have to wait until the next
sysinternals book comes out to find out :)

Meh, I like being reminded every day that I am using beta software :)

Someone already has, at least for XP. I can't remember the name of it
though. It allowed you to force the setting of any procees and ran in the
tray.

"Process Tamer." Available from DonationCoder, but of course like anything,
not sure if it works with Vista.

I think it's caused by Explorer creating lots of icons and folder pictures
etc.

It happens most after installing new software, and of course just after
installing Vista.

My recommendation is to leave it running overnight and let it finish what
it's doing.

Hardly ever happens these days, but at first I wondered what was going on.

BTW the state of the indexer seems to make no difference - as soon as I
installed Word it went crazy for a bit updating preview pictures then calmed
down.

Hmm you're right it seems to have stopped now :)

Even still, I think *whatever* it is doing needs to be ran at a lower
priority, as whenever it is doing whatever it does the system slows to a
crawl.

You know...I haven't tried it yet on Vista, because I have too many other
things I want to check out with the OS, but my LFWPT likes "blackbox" when
she uses windows...I wonder how well it would work in Vista...I'm not very
fond of it, because I tend to like my taskbar and such, but... it sure would
save the problem of explorer straining the system...

I'll be more enthusiastic about
encouraging thinking outside the box
when there's evidence of any thinking
going on inside it.
