A few days ago I decided that I'd clear my computer's hard
drive (through partions) and I did. I've been working on
it for days thanks to a little problem I had though.
I was installing XP to my hard drive, and suddenly my
computer restarted. I went back to do it again but it said
I could not do it and no operating system was found. I am
very angry since I have an upgrade and suddenly my old
Windows 98 is gone. So now I have to purchase a new
Windows XP CD, but I do not want to, because of this
displeasing situation. Is there anything I can do to still
install XP, or do I have to buy a new copy??

Why do you need to purchase another cd?

You do not need to have the an OS installed, the setup program will prompt you for verification during installation. Here's an excerpt from the installation procedure:

---quote---
If your Windows XP CD-ROM is an upgrade, you are prompted to insert a CD-ROM of a previous operating system to check for upgrade compliance. Remove the Windows XP CD-ROM, and then insert the CD-ROM from your previous operating system into the CD-ROM drive. Valid qualifying media for upgrade compliance include:
Windows 98
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 Professional

When you receive a prompt for the Windows XP CD-ROM, remove your previous operating system CD-ROM, and then insert your Windows XP CD-ROM.
---end quote---

If you have misplaced your Windows 98 CD, borrow one from a friend for use during this part of the installation.

If your win98 CD is missing, you need a full copy of XP.
If you still have your Win98 install CD, you can use that as
qualifying media for the XP upgrade.
