Vertical Ruler keeps reappearing

In Microsoft Word 2003 SP3, I have gone to TOOLS -> Options and unclicked the
VERTICAL
RULER option. However, it seems to reappear on a regular basis, no matter
what document I am working in.

Is this a virus, worm, trojan or some other bug?

How can I get rid of this problem?? Thanks, ken

It is simply a minor bug in Word 2003 that causes it to lose the settings
stored in the Word data key in the registry. Various correspondents have
blamed it on the action of add-ins, but no-one has tied it down suffciently
for it to be corrected. You can try renaming the data key (see
http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm) and that *may* fix it,
but the simplest solution is to force the settings that are prone to change
using autoopen and autonew macros in normal.dot

In this case you need to add the line

ActiveWindow.DisplayVerticalRuler = False

to both an autonew and an autoopen macro - see
http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm for further details.

When I had problems with the horizontal ruler disappearing, it turned out
that I had turned it off in Print Preview, so every time I switched to Print
Preview and back, the problem resurfaced. You might check and see whether
you have the vertical ruler displayed in Print Preview. If so, turn it off
and see if that solves the problem.
