ruler won't stay displayed in print view

Help - I can't get the ruler at the top of the document to stay displayed. I have gone through tools, options and checked Vertical ruler - but it just won't display. If I go on the document where the ruler is supposed to be it will give me two arrows and if I wait the ruler will diplay as long as I keep my mouse there. This is very annoying because I can't use the ruler for setting my tabs -- I can't see anything

Please help me!! Thanks

.

And you have the Ruler checked under the View tab?

On the General tab of Tools | Options, clear the check box for "Provide
feedback with animation." To display the vertical ruler, make sure that
option is checked on the View tab of Tools | Options (the vertical ruler is
displayed only in Print Layout view). To display the horizontal ruler, check
View | Ruler.

I tried that and it still doesn't work. It won't display the ruler at all. IF I go into "print preview" I can click "show the ruler" and it will -- but when I am using the document there is no ruler. I have taken off "provide feedback with animation" Still doesn't work

There is some confusion here. You say "the ruler at the top of the
document", and then you say "Vertical ruler". The ruler at the top of
the document is the horizontal ruler, not the vertical ruler.

I assume that you really want the horizontal ruler:

In Word 2002, you make the horizontal ruler visible by setting View |
Ruler. (NOT Tools | Options | etc!) If you clear this option but have
Tools | Options | General | "Provide feedback with animation" checked,
the ruler auto-hides. If you clear both options, the ruler is not
visible.

Word has a nasty habit of changing your option settings for you. It
has been reported that recording a macro to turn off options in
spelling and grammar checking will incidentally turn on "Provide
feedback with animation"!

There is a long-standing bug that sometimes causes both rulers to
disappear if you are in Print Layout View and you create a selection
that extends across a page boundary.

If you really want the vertical ruler:

This ruler is available only in Print Layout View; and then only if
Tools | Options | View | "Vertical ruler" is checked. In Word 2002 the
vertical ruler disappears even in Print Layout View if you use the
"hide white space between pages" feature.

THANK YOU! I have been trying for MONTHS to get the Horizontal Ruler to stop "disappearing"! Why isn't this in HELP? Or if it is, why isn't there a link in HELP that is triggered by the word "Ruler"??

I echo the thanks. I couldn't get my horizontal ruler to stay put either. And a search for on "ruler" did not turn up anything useful until I got here. Thanks a lot!

I've just installed Microsoft Office Pro 2003 and the horizontal ruler is o.k. However, I've been trying to find a way of displaying the vertical ruler in print view. Is there absolutely no way of accessing this? How very annoying it is! If you can possibly help, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Thanks Graham. I've just re-read my message and realise I asked for vertical ruler in print layout view. In actual fact I should have asked for it to be displayed while I'm typing the document.

I've been used to this in Office and having updated to MS Office Pro 2003 I've been disappointed that it appears not to be available in a more modern version!

If you know how to have the vertical ruler displayed during the typing of the document I'd be very grateful for your advice.

Print layout view *is* the view in which you type the document trhat
represents a close approximation to the finished page. It used to be called
Page layout view in some older versions. The ruler should show if you have
view > ruler checked AND tools > options > view > show vertical ruler. If it
doesn't then you may have a minor registry corruption. See

If you're creating the document in Normal view, then no, you can't display
the vertical ruler. As Graham says, most users (excluding me) compose
documents in Print Layout view, in which the vertical ruler can be
displayed. If you prefer the continuous text of Normal view, try hiding the
white space between pages in Print Layout view (see
http://home.earthlink.net/~wordfaqs/WhiteSpace.htm).
