Vertical lines

When typing upper case letters,i frequently get vertical lines |L (like this)
before the letter. What's up? Also,even though |I hit the space bar I
sometimesdon't get a spacebetween words.

The vertical line you describe is called a "Pipe".
"Pipe" is what you get when you hit Shift + \
On some keyboards, the left 'Shift' key and the 'slash' key are adjacent to
each other.
Are you hitting the "Shift" key and the "Pipe" key at the same time?

Perhaps its that stickykeys thing holding the shift for you? You know that
thing that comes up when you repeatedly press shift?

Have you tried another keyboard?
