Verifying DMI Pool Data...Disk won't boot, but is accessible as a secondary master

I ran the disk checking utility on Windows XP professional, when the
system rebooted, I got the Verifying DMI Pool Data message and the
system hung. So far I have

Checked for viruses (Virus definitions were current)
Checked the hard drive with the manufacturers utility (Passed)
Removed all cards except video and tried to reboot
Used the Recovery Consol and ran FixMBR and FixBoot
The disk still won't boot, however I can access it if it is used as a
second master. Files access perfectly.
I've tried to load DiskProbe, but it's not on my Windows XP CD
Any suggestions?

Forgot to add, I also eset the bios and checked to make sure all the
settings were correct. Hard drive detections set to "Auto"

If it's not booting, how did you manage to run all of those diagnostics?

Most of the times I've seen a computer hang at that point, it's a hardware
problem. Try a different IDE cable.

You can run chkdsk /r from the recovery consol
You can run the manufacturers utilties from DOS
I've swapped cables and installed the drive in another box
Still no boot.
Like I said...I can read from the disk once the system is booted from
another hard drive. Any other ideas.

That's true, but if it stops at the DMI pool message, you wouldn't be be
able to get to the recovery console or a DOS floppy. The system would just
hang. Or was the DMI error just once, and now there are other issues? Or
what have you done to get around the DMI error? Does that only happen when
you're trying to boot from the drive, but it doesn't when it's the slave?

Do you get the DMI message on another computer, or does it just not get to
windows? "Doesn't boot" covers a lot of ground. And I wouldn't expect a hard
drive with XP to boot fully on another machine. At what point does it stall?
Any error messages?

Lots of ideas, but lots of questions, too.
