If I buy Windows Media Player 9 Series Plus! Digital Media
Edition can I take my VCR home movie tapes and somehow
record them to a CD for posterity? I've heard the VCR
tapes will deteriorate over time.

So do optical discs, especially if left in the light...

You don't need digital media edition to do what you want. All you need is
Movie Maker (part of XP), or Movie Maker 2 (a free upgrade from Windows
Update), and a video card with video in capabilities. You can then record
away...
