VCD vs DVD

I don't want to get hit over the head for asking a
question that is on your web-site. I read your web-site
but still have a few questions. I'm not a computer geek
nor do I understand much of anything beside the fact I
love to make movies. So I hope the question won't piss
alot of people off because they think everyone should
already know the answer.
Here goes....I have a VCD movie making program. Are
movie Cd's burned with this format as good or pretty
close to a DVD standard? Can these be played on a regular
DVD player?
The reason I ask is, I play the movies I make through my
computer but other people want to watch them through
their DVD player. Will they be able to with the VCD cd's
I burn?
Thanks lorie

Loving movie-making is more important than being a computer geek. You can
always get a geek to help you find a way to do what you want.

No, VCDs are at the bottom of the quality scale and DVDs are pretty much at
the top. But they should play in their DVD players, but best to check first
if you can.

I made a VCD with the new version of PhotoStory and took it to my local
Circuit City store to test on new DVD players. Worked fine on one and
couldn't play on the other.

Go to a store that sells several kinds of DVD players and read the boxes
where they list the supported formats. Most players say they support the
various hardware formats (discs) like CD-R, CD-RW, etc. This makes them
sound like they play everything, but this doesn't mean they will play
various video formats. A small percentage (maybe 20-40%) say on the boxes
they will play VCD and SVCD. However, I do not know that all will work as
advertised. Many times, the lowest cost players will play more formats,
surprisingly.

I have burned home videos in DVD format (using Ulead software) on a CD-R and
it plays in my DVD player, but my parents Sylvania will not play it. THis
is frustrating.
