Various problems after auto update

Hello...
After a recent autoupdate from MS(I'm thinking perhaps it was the
IE7 Update), the following issues are present on the Compaq Presario
2500 notebook I'm working on:

Network adapters appear normally in Device Manager, but are not shown
in networking options and are not functioning

My Computer takes up to 20-30 seconds to locate drives. I can navigate
through them normally once they appear.

System Restore comes up blank...I tried reinstalling it using sr.inf
to no avail.

IE does also, does not open any menu items like About
- Attempting to reinstall IE 6 results in message "Newer version
of IE installed", possibly meaning IE7 got through but apparently
didn't install all the way. No uninstall options for IE7 appear either
in the Add/Remove Programs menu or in the windows directory. I thought
I would reinstall IE7 to resolve this...it went through the motions,
but no change after restarting.

All Programs is in the Start Menu, but the list will not appear when
mouse is hovered on it...I switched to the classic menu and tried it,
it shows up as empty.
- Tried the command "regsvr32 /i shell32.dll, no success

IE and Outlook are not pinned at the top of the Start Menu, only
Solitaire is located there. Commonly used apps appear normally.

Run, Help & Support, Search Printers & Faxes dialogs do not appear in
Start Menu, despite being checked in Start Menu properties

WGA message appears saying the version of Windows may be counterfeit,
when it actually came with the machine. I would blame this on a
factory installation, except that I have already restored it once
using the recovery cd.

Am I looking at a format/reload here(not a problem if need be), or
does anyone out there have other ideas first? I've considered trying
a manual system restore in dos(moving/copying the SAM, SECURITY, etc.
files). Thanks in advance for any input.

Next time dont, and never, use autoupdate.

Next time dont, and never, use autoupdate.

The system in question is not mine...I don't use it on my computer
either. Once I get this resolved for my client, I will disable it on
theirs as well. Any **constructive** advice is appreciated.

Like I stated earlier, I am authorized to format/reload, but I am
treating that as a last resort if I can't find or be guided to a
better answer first.

Please state who authorized you...

You gotta be kidding...you can't figure this out?

He's working on some else's computer, and that
person has said he can go this far if necessary.

Sheesh...
