v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com doesn't

I've got an out of the box machine with XP Home
I select Windows Update from Tools in IE and get directed to
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us
The page loads with the message

"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...

Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this
time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security
warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Install or Yes to install the software."

but nothing ever happens. IE says the page has loaded, the "install updates"
link is greyed out, as is the "Restore hidden updates"

I'm sure I'm not up to date. Anyone got any ideas....?
