v4, xp pro, explorer, ie, outlook, and others don't work after v4

I had a problem where I couldn't copy files, move files, move icons, internet explorer links didn't work, and many other usability issues. Outlook couldn't find word, it's editor, but word still worked just fine. VS.NET 2003 wouldn't compile anything, saying it was missing parts.

I narrowed it down to the install of windows update v4. If I restore to before v4, everything works fine. If I let the website install v4, then nothing works again.

I have done this a couple of times now, and have nailed it down to windows update v4.... Any ideas?

THanks,

Paul

Windows Update V4 Engine?

To assure clean installs, your anti-virus application should be disabled and
all other running processes closed before going to Windows Update and when
downloading/installing from any MS page.

Windows updates and patches are far too important not to use Windows Update,
Paul.

One doesn't need Windows Update to get patched up securely.

If Paul can't get the regular WinUp page to work properly, I think that
workaround would be incomprehensible for Paul. Better he should learn to
walk before trying to run.

Well, he was smart enough to figure out when his problem started, and was
able to take action to undo the problem. It would be my not-so-humble
opinion, that he was smart enough to follow some links, then download and
install the patches.

I don't trust WinUpdate all that much to begin with, especially doing
multiple updates concurrently. I much prefer to do the patching manually,
than trust that all the planets are lined up in the right way to be able to
depend on WinUpdate not to screw something up.
