USMT Simple Migration

G

Guest

I have been researching the new USMT (2.6) and am looking for a way to setup
a simple migration procedure for Desktops that are coming off lease. I only
need to be able to migrate the favorites, desktop settings and network
printers. The old machines are typically Win2k Pro, but some will have XP
Pro. All of the new machine will be on XP Pro. I have been experimenting
with modifying the miguser.inf file to achieve my desired results. I want to
make sure that I am creating the smallest .img file possible as it will need
to be pulled over a WAN link. Is there a simple way to set this up with USMT
or even a better way that I am not thinking of? I have read all of the MS
white docs on this tool and am not sure about how to go about this.
Any and all suggestions appriciated.
Thanks,
Chris

If you only migrate favorites, desktop settings and network printers
you'll end up with a very small data store, for most computers it will
be less then a few megabytes in size.

Suggestion: Create copies of the default template files, comment out
the features you dont want and the ran scanstate with the "new"
templates.

Johan,
I just finished this up yesterday and that is exactly what I did. I am now
pulling all of the settings I need. I was able to remove all of the excess
data aside from the real player. Does anyone know how I can comment this out
of the transfer?
Thanks again for the help.

It should be enough to comment out the RealPlayer Basic line from the
[Applications] section in Migapp.inf.

What RealPlayer data is migrated?

It is the executable from the Program Files folder.
The following is found under the [FILE|"Domain Name"|User Name"] section of
the Migration document which is created when scanstate is run.

"C:\Program
Files\Real",0x00000010,0xBE36E780,0x01C4E3DE,0xEC15CC77,0x01C4F341,0xBE36E780,0x01C4E3DE,0x00000000,0x00000000,"Real",""
"C:\Program

I am assuming I need to comment this out somewhere, but I can't find mention
of the realplayer in any of my current .inf files.
Thanks again for the help.

scanstate /localonly /o /compress- /i:miguser.inf /i:sysfiles.inf /migism.inf
\\"migration folder"
I looked at the migapp.inf and didn't see the Realplayer reference. It
appears that I must have deleted the line in attempting to get rid of it. I
can copy the original back into my \bin directory. Can you help me to
comment the realpayer out properly?
Thanks again for all the help.

Since you're not using migapp.inf in your scanstate command line,
there is no need modifying it, its simple not used at all.

I did some testing and its actually the startmenu and shared startmenu
sections in the miguser.inf template that migrates the realplayer
files (some of the files, not all)

In order not to nigrate the realplayer files you need to change the
sections in miguser.inf to look like below.

[User Settings]
Desktop,, dir,%csidl_desktopdirectory%
; Start Menu,, dir,%csidl_startmenu%
Favorites,, dir,%csidl_favorites%
My Pictures,, dir,%csidl_mypictures%
My Documents,, dir,%csidl_personal%
Quick Launch,, dir,%QuickLaunchDir%

[System Settings]
Shared Desktop,, dir,%csidl_common_desktopdirectory%
; Shared Start Menu,, dir,%csidl_common_startmenu%
Shared Favorites,, dir,%csidl_common_favorites%
Shared Documents,, dir,%csidl_common_documents%
