USMT question

Im new to USMT, and have been just told that I need to migrate 1700 clients
from Win 2K pro to XP sp2 by the end of the year.

Ive read that usmt is a great tool that will gather up all the data and user
settings from the client and store them on a network share.

All my machines are partioned and we store all or most of the users data on
the d: drive.

My question is this.. Can I run usmt on the C: drive, store the image on the
d: drive. Reimage just the C:\ drive with Windows Xp and then restore the
usmt file back to the C:\ leaving drive D not touched with all data still
there ?

Thanks in advnaced !
