Using XP view, but PC starts and shuts down with Classic view

M

Me and only me

Hi

I wonder if someone can help with this irritating issue? I use XP Pro
with SP2.

A few months ago, I installed Norton Systemworks, did a few things wit
it like defragging and checking the hard drives, realised again how bad
it was and uninstalled it. When I sent to re-boot after the uninstall,
I was surprised to see that the shutdown screen was in the Classic
interface, where the user has to select the action from a drop-down box.
I re-started, and was again surprised that the Classic view appeared on
the machine as Windows started.

This stayed like it despite me using the classic start menu. After a
while I got irritate with it, and re-loaded Windows and all was fine
again.

Things were OK but then a few weeks ago, I decided to check my ports
using Shields Up from GRC from here -
http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2 (not an advert - really!)
That told me that ports 22 and 80 were open, and that was that, as far
as I was concerned. That's ALL I did on the PC apart from checking some
emails.

However, to my surprise, when I switched the PC off, it shut down with
the Classic shutdown screen. I switched on again, and there it was -
the Classic start-up screen. And it's been here ever since. I have the
start-up menu as XP style, and have tried switching to Classic,
re-booting and then changing to XP view, but whatever I do my start-up
and shutdown screens resolutely stay as Classic view. Everything else -
menu, control panel etc are displayed as XP view.

I'd like to fin out how to get the start-up and shutdown screens back to
XP view as well, but don't know how. Can anyone help?

I did go on the Shields Up forum at news.grc.com - grc.shieldsup and
asked what might have happened and if it was running Shields Up which
caused the problem, but I was told if could not have made this change as
it did not have or run any ActiveX content. Now ActiveX is a black box
to me, and I haven't the faintest idea why or what might have happened.

Any ideas and advice would be most welcome.

I'm surprised that you still had the problem after you 're-loaded Windows' but try this little fix from this site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm this is a reputable site and the files called VBS file are safe to run.
Scroll down to line 271. Stuck in Classic View? Undo Now

Download the file and run it usually by right clicking and selecting install. if you get a security warning disregard this message and install. Reboot/restart and see how you go.

I'm surprised that you still had the problem after you 're-loaded
Windows' but try this little fix from this site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm this is a reputable site
and the files called VBS file are safe to run.
Scroll down to line 271. Stuck in Classic View? Undo Now

Download the file and run it usually by right clicking and selecting
install. if you get a security warning disregard this message and
install. Reboot/restart and see how you go.

Yahoo!!

It worked great. Clicked on the link and voila! Classix view
disappeared and XP view came back!

Thanks a million.
But - any idea why the classic view came back to start with?

BTW, by 're-loaded Windows', I mean I re-formatted the drive and
re-installed from scratch. I have to admit, I tried the lazy way
first - I renamed win.com to win.old and re-installe, but that did not
change anything, so I di a 'proper' reinstall as above

Anywy, thanks again

Hi,

214 windows xp style changes to windows classic
271 stuck in classic view? undo now

Will the above reg files at that website work for the problem below?
which of the reg files should i apply?

I have been using Win XP Home for about 6 months now on my current
machine. Recently, something funny has started happening. I have an
administrator account and a restricted user account which i use mostly.

I had the windows XP (silver) theme running. Many times when i start
the machine the theme switches to the classic view. Very few times it
opens up as the XP silver theme i had before. This happens even after i

reset the theme back to the WinXP ( blue or silver ) theme. The
wallpaper
however remains the same.

Funnily it happens ( though very few times ) with the administrator
account also.

I also noticed that the wireless network connection does not get
enabled automatically in the restricted user account ( as it usually
does ) and i have to restart the machine for that.

All other stuff seems to work perfectly well.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,
Chetan

I tried the Classicdisable.reg and it seems to have solved the problem.
I am hoping the network problem does not appear later though.

Thanks for all the help.

Thats funny.
It seems that classicdisable.reg did not fix the problem yet. I still
do end up getting the classic theme. I wonder what is happening.

As an extreme measure i have displaced the WindowsClassic.theme file
from C:\Windows\Resources\Theme.
I hope this sets it right.

Thanks and Regards,
Chetan
