Using Word 97 on XP (new PC) ----

How does another user on my XP computer utilize the same "normal.dot"
features that I'm using? When I open Word under Jack, it opens with
features I've customized over the years; but, when my wife opens Word under
her user name, Kaye, she gets the features of a new install.

When I do a search, Normal.dot shows up in
C:\MSOffice97\Office and in
C:\MSOffice97\Templates and in
C:\Documents and Settings\Jack\Recent

Put the normal.dot here, in each user:
C:\Documents and Settings\your user name here\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates

If the OP wants the template to remain the same for all
users, a single copy may be stored in a chosen location
(the root of C:\, e.g.) and each user may point to that
location from within Word. (Tools>Options>File Locations>
User Templates)

Thanks folks --

Mysterious happenings -- now (a day later, without doing anything) Kaye has
the same Normal.dot!! It is shared, as in
"each user may point to that location from within Word. (Tools>Options>File
Locations>
User Templates)"

Suggest you revert this discussion to the newsgroups specialising in
Word. Experts there.

FYI, I have a strong recollection is is recommended (and documented
somewhere) that you not share same normal.dot file with multiple users.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Did try that -- the only response I got was not clear.

That sounds logical. Phil said:

There is no Templates folder where he indicates, so I guess the idea is to
copy the MSOffice97 Templates folder and paste it under C:\Documents and
Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\ for each user, then, do
within Word [Tools>Options>File Locations>User Templates] and enter the
path.

Oh well. It happens. Need to be persistent to capture someone's
attention. (or hire one of the experts).

There is no such folder simply because it was not yet created. You can
create this if you want. This is the "conventional" place.

That's a good plan. The issue is to get the templates where you want
them to be and then tell Word where they are. It doesn't really matter
where they are as long as you have access to them.

Anything but normal.dot can be shared. Don't share normal.dot
