Using USB adapter and Networking...

Ok, I've had the same problems with the Setup Wizard not opening, and when I read Ken's post about the Network Connections folder being empty, a light went off. The only icon in my Network Connections folder is for my LAN (it is active, so everything is working). There is no icon for my cable connection to the internet (which I believe is where I need to turn on ICS). Since I can't get the Wiz to run and turn on ICS for me, and I have no icon for my cable modem, how am I suppose to turn on ICS? I thought reinstalling the modem would work, but as my topic suggests, I technically don't have a modem installed, just a USB adapter that connects my computer to my modem.

To clarify, I can't figure out a way to turn ICS on. I did try what has been suggested in other posts, but none of it worked.

Any help would, well.... help.

Hi Joshua,

Could you please tell me what's your network look like (e.g. how many
machines, are they connected to a router)? If you have only one machine,
you probably don't need to turn on ICS. You also won't see an icon for you
cable connection since the cable modem is connected to your network adapter.

If you have more than one network adapter on your machine, you can turn on
ICS by going to the Advanced tab on a LAN Properties page. (Right click LAN
in connection folder, select Properties and then go to Advanced tab.)

I only have 2 computers set up. The host is connected by cable modem (cable ran to usb adapter, then from there to the PC's USB Port), and the other computer is connected to the first by a crossover cable. They both run WinXP also. I had these same 2 hooked together this way a couple years ago, but the last time I did it, the Network Setup Wizard ran fine for me (as opposed to this time, it won't run on the host). I do remember going to the Advanced tab on the Properties page of the LAN last time and checking the box that stated something along the lines of "Allow other computers to share this internet connection", the rebooting. But that option doesn't exist now. There is the option about firewalls and that's it. If I remember right, last time, the "sharing" option was right under that.

So, you're saying there should only be one icon in Network Connections? Just the one for the LAN connection? Because that's the only one I have. It's categorized under "LAN or High-Speed Internet".

I hope that's enough info. If not, let me know...please. I really needed to have this done tonight, and I've been working on it for 4 days now.
