Using two computers

I want to buy a second computer to basically use for
storage. Can I connect two computers and transfer files
back and forth with xp. I am a novice so maybe this is a
stupid question.

Yes, it is called networking. Both computers will need either network cards
or usb ports(which almost all do).

An easier solution is just to add a 2nd hard drive to your system and back
up your files there.

An even easier solution, is add an external usb hard drive and back up your
files there.

A burner is another solution you may consider.

I don't think buying another system just for backing up files is financially
the wisest move. But then, I'm frugal to a fault.

No, it's not a stupid question. All you need are two inexpensive
Network Interface Cards (they can be found for USA $10 or so) and
a length of crossover cable (depending on length, $5-10). All the
software you need to network them is part of Windows.
