I would like to connect 2 computers with a crossover cable with XP Pro

Hello,

I have a computer that I am not using it's a 2.4 and I replaced it with a
2.4 dual core. On the one I am not using I have a 300Gb and 100Gb hard
drives so a total of 400GB that I would like to be able to use as a backup
for my main computer files. On my main computer I have a bunch of folders
that I would like to copy to computer 2.

I've seen several turtorials on how to connect 2 computers with XP but each
is a bit different. can someone direct me to a good tutorial on how to
configure the computers so I can move files back and forth.

Once this is done will I have something on my main computer to let me know
that it is the 2nd computer? and also once it's done how do I move files
back and forth.

Rather than try to explain it on here I would like to see a tutorial that I
can refer to one that shows pictures would be best as I can follow them
better than just instructions

Thanks

Yes, you can set up a network and move or copy files as desired
between the two computers. A drive on a networked computer can be seen
on the other computer in almost exactly the same way as a local drive,
and you can give it a drive letter and move or copy just as with a
local drive (but the drive letter will tell you its not local)

However, if all you are looking for is backup drives, you may find it
much easier to buy two USB external cases (about $20-25US each) and
mount the two drives in them. You can then plug either or both of them
into USB ports on your new computer and also easily copy or move files
between them and the new computers drives, just as if the USB drives
were local (and again the drive letter will tell you its not local).

And if mounting drives in the external USB case scares you, let me
point out that it is *extremely* easy. Even someone who is all thumbs
can easily do this in under five minutes.

The one in XP's Help and Support is actually a good one.

Hello Kim,

I know it is not good netiquette to post within a post, but as this one
doesnt have too many follow-ups I didnt think you would mind.(or the group.)
The reason for my post is the links you gave the o/p and I was wondering
if you knew of any that have similar information regarding 'how to'
network 98SE to Xp?

I have two computers both dual booting with 98SE and Xp, (although, the
one I am using has a 'busted' xp.. it boots into it, but half of the
whole operating system isnt there, but at least the boot manager is.)
and I would like to network them together. Havent had any experience in
this area but am a good reader of instructions.

Any assist gratefully welcomed.
