Using the "Repair Console" on the install CD

I got a message (XP Home) saying the "C:\windows\system32
\config\system was corrupt or missing. Use "r" the repair
feature on the install CD to replace this file."
Pressing "r" on the install opens the repair console which
is a DOS environment. How do I get "whole" files off of
the install CD to replace into the opsys? All of them
seem to have extensions with an underscore such as:
system.mo_. Using 98 we could "extract" files from the
cabs on the CD to replace corrupt system files. Can this
be done on XP? If so, how? Is this a bogus Microsoft
message or can it actually be done? Does anyone know?

Yes it can be done but what you need to do is take a look
at the Microsoft Knowledge Base article #307545. What has
actually happened is that a registry hive...in your case
the system hive...has become corrupted. Make sure to
finish all 4 steps in the article or the system may not
remain in a stable condition after you get it back up and
running.
