Using SentTo Menu Causes Computer to stop responding

I have Win XP Pro with SP2 installed, on a workgroup. I tried to send a
document that I was working on the Desktop by using the SendTo
Desktop(Create Shortcut) however the computer stopped responding and I had
to log off and back on to clear it.

How do I resolve this issue. I have checked windows update for any missing
updated. it reports no updates required

You had the document open when you tried this? Word opens a temporary
file at the opening location when you edit it. I would wonder what it
tried to do. Just r-click the document and then Send to desktop, Then
double-click Shortcut to open the document.
