Using "Send to" for printer does not work

When I try to use "Send to" to send a file to the printer (where the
shortcut target is hp officejet 6100), nothing happens. When I use
"Send to" to, for instance, Skype (where the shortcut target is of this
kind: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\SendTo\Skype.lnk), it works fine.

Any ideas what could be the problem?

Open Printers and Faxes from the control Panel.
Right click your printer and select Create Shortcut.

Click Yes to the message that pops up:

Windows cannot create a shortcut here.
Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?

Close Printers and Faxes.
Start | Run | Type: sendto | Click OK |
Copy and paste the new Printer shortcut into the right hand pane or drag the
new shortcut from your Desktop into the SendTo folder in the right hand
pane.

If you get a message about Would you like to replace the existing file,
click Yes.

evenfakier huh? LOL

Thank you for the suggestion, Wes.

However, when I click "OK" in Run, the "Open with" window opens. Run
thinks "sendto" is a file, I guess.

Well, I went to C:\Documents and Settings\[Owner]\SendTo and replaced
the existing shortcut. Still nothing happens when I try to print a
doc file by right-clicking the file and the clicking Send to and then
the printer shortcut.

This is becoming strangier and strangier :-)

By the way, I use XP Home and HP oficejet 6110.

Hi Hans,

Start | Run, where Run equals the Run command.

I suspect [Owner].

sendto typed into the Run command should open
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\SendTo

Type or paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK..

%userprofile%

What folder opens?

Type or paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK..

%userprofile%\SendTo

What folder opens?

%userprofile% is an environment variable that is the path to the user's home
folder.

Typing or pasting %userprofile% into the Start | Run box opens to the
Documents and Settings folder on whatever drive it is located on for the
logged in user.

I.e. C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here
I.e. C:\Documents and Settings\Wesley P. Vogel

When Owner is the account name, it was usually created by the people that
set up and sold the machine. They had no idea what the user's real name
would be so they created an account named Owner.

To see if the shortcut works...

If you still have a shortcut to HP oficejet 6110 on your desktop, drag a
Notepad file or some other short text file to the shortcut. That file
should print by dragging it onto the HP oficejet 6110 shortcut.

Or drag a Notepad file or some other short text file to the HP oficejet 6110
shortcut in C:\Documents and Settings\[Owner]\SendTo. That file should also
print.

These should all work in the Run command also:
%tmp%
favorites

%tmp% or %temp% should open C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local
Settings\Temp

favorites should open C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Favorites

No, that is not the problem. By "[Owner]", I meant that a variation of

Still opens Open With.

They all opens Open With.

Now, RegEdit in Run works as it should.

And when I click on Skype in Send To, the file in question is sent to
Skype for transfer to somebody. "Desktop" works in Send to.

It seems as if Send to works for items with a file in the shortcut
target, but when it just says "FinePrint" or "hp officejet 6100
series", it does not work. And, as I indicated above, dropping a text
file onto the hp shortcut on the desktop does *not* work.

I hope there are some clues in what I have mentioned so far.

Hi Hans,

Here's the technical details, something is messed up. ;-)

I do not know what exactly messed up. ;-(

This command...
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL
will open Open With.

If that command is typed into the Run command Open With will open.

I don't even know where to start.

Can you try a System Restore Point?

If I type this into the Run command...
C:\Documents and Settings\User
The Open With applet opens.

First, C:\Documents and Settings\User does not exist on my machine.

Second, Windows has no idea if User is a file or a folder, so it must GUESS
that it's a file and there is no extension so it gets confused.

Third I discovered this working on another poster's problem, not the same
problem either.

Somehow your paths are messed up, but I am not sure how.

See this...

Reset the Shell Folders paths to defaults
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/usershellfolders.htm

Look at this key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
and compare to the chart.
