I've been running xp home edition. Something happened and I have no xp
system files. Computer is running NT now. Can I use my xp recovery disk to
fix this? If so, can someone please tell me how exactly i need to do it? I
also have disks that my anti-virus program suggested that I make. Called AVG
Bootable and 7 rescue disks. My computer has not been restarted since all
the changes happened. Been afraid to do it. Any help or advice is very
appreciated.
Thanks,

a) insert your win cd > setup > new install > repair current installation

.....or....

b) insert your win cd > setup > new install

.....then if you choose......

c) in windows desktop launch your recovery program to begin the process of
utilizing your restore disks.

Thank you for responding. Question...to try what you suggest, do I need to
restart with the win cd or put the cd in while i'm already running?

I think the change over to NT (which was accidental) put my xp system files
in the *dump* I have no knowledge whatsoever about the dump. As for the
recovery disk. My computer came with XP Home installed. They sent only the
one Recovery disk with it.

If your machine only came with a reocvery disk then, in all
probability, this disk will set your machine back to the factory
defaults. If this is the case then you will loose ALL the data and
software you have installed on the machine.

If the machine is running NT then you should be able to save your data
to CD or some external data store (USB memory stick, external HDD etc),
if NT cannot access your data then try Knoppix (
http://www.knoppix.org/). Do the back first just in case.

Of course, if you do not want to save anything on the drive then go
ahead and do the restore.
