Using Outlook 2003 for POP3 mails

Guest

I have successfully configured outlook 2003 with a POP3 mail (Gmail). The
problem I am facing is that all the Gmail messages (in inbox & in sent box)
have been downloaded into the outlook inbox. The sent folder is not getting
configured with the sent folder of Gmail.

As per Gmail help, this is a known issue in outlook which can be solved by
configuring outlook to syncronise with the correspoding folder in the Gmail.

The problem is I am not able to find any such way to do that in Outlook 2003.

I was able to configure Gmail POP3 with Outlook Express & there was no such
issue.

Pl. help me resolve the problem in Outlook 2003

Of course not. POP is one-way and the protocol has no concept of folders.

Gmail Help doesn't mention synchronizing Outlook's Sent Items folder with
the Gmail Sent Mail folder anywhere I can find. Please post a URL to an
article where you believe it says that's possible.

Because you can't, at least with POP access.

Outlook Express can't save sent items in the Gmail Sent Mail folder, either.
No POP client can.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for answering my query.

Pl. refer to the link as pasted here on categorising downloads.

Is there any way by which the following issues can be taken care of when
using POP3 account in outlook 2003:

1) Syncronising sent items folder of POP3 account & Outlook by using some
plug-in, tool or utility?

2) If I send a mail directly from the web interface of POP3 account, the
sent mail gets downloaded in my inbox of the outlook. For eg. if I send a
mail directly from Gmail by opening it on the internet & send a mail. When i
do send/receive on outlook, then this sent mail gets downloaded into my inbox
of the outlook. How do I avoid this problem?

Also, could you pl. help me with using Hotmail in Outlook 2003. I have
successfully configured Hotmail with Outlook 2003 & I can send & receive
mails. If I want to change the location of the folder where my hotmail mails
are stored locally on the pc by Outlook, how do i do that. For eg. Hotmail
mails are locally stored by default in the C:\Documents and
Settings\user_name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Personal
Folders(1).pst.

I want it to be changed to any other folder on drive D. How can I do that?

Your help will be highly appreciated & thanks in advance for your answers.

That page doesn't mention anything about Sent Items.

As I said already, it's impossible.
2) If I send a mail directly from the web interface of POP3 account,

The web interface doesn't use POP protocols. POP and web are completely
unrelated.

Apparently gmail works differently from any other POP server and includes
your Sent Mail folder messages in the download. POP servers aren't supposed
to work that way. Nonetheless, it's a one-way path. Gmail may feed your
sent mail when you download, but you can't so the other way.

Brian, thanks for your help. Though I guess I'll have to settle for the
compromise in using POP3 accounts. But i must appreciate your help in moving
Hotmail data file in Outlook.
