Using "net use"

I am trying to map a laptop to my workgroup using DOS prompts. I get to the
network but when I use "net use" it asks for a password.... what password is
it looking for? I use my admin password under my name.. but that is not it...
I want to map a drive on my desktop. This is a workgroup. It is the D
drive and a directory under a route directory that is shared out.

You have a share on a computer, and an account setup on that computer and
activated for network access. That account, and its password, is what you
provide to map the share. The account is setup on the same computer as the
shared drive.

Your question is a bit unclear. You're asking about "map a laptop to my
workgroup". Is the share on the laptop (being accessed from a computer in the
workgroup), or is the share on a computer somewhere in the workgroup (being
accessed from the laptop)?

The share is on the desktop.. my actual problem is... the laptop has a new
hard drive. The image is on the desktop share. All other computers in the
house can get to the share. I use a boot disk which loads network drivers on
the laptop and get an IP address. Once I get the IP address... that is when
I cannot get to the share on the desktop.
When you say "account" do you mean "user"?
The boot disk asks for a user name, workgroup, password, and script.. I use
my user name, password, workgroup, and I use the script
net use x: \\desktop\share

In general, "account" == "user". Not always.

Is the desktop running XP Home, XP Pro with Simple File Sharing, or XP Pro with
Advanced File Sharing? This is a key question.

You have to activate the right account, on the desktop computer.
