Using msconfig to restore rpcss.exe from disc

You said: "Use msconfig to expand it from your winXP CD."

I'm sorry to be ignorant, but a little more detail would be helpful. I've
opened msconfig and I see the Expand File option, but I don't know which
..cab file to select to restore from. Can you help some more? Thanks.

Here's a link to try on expanding

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prgg_det_pvfh.asp

Usually, from a command line (START RUN CMD ENTER)
Switch to the CD, by entering D: <rtn> for your CD Cdrive
expand(space)d:\I386\rpcss.dl_(space)C:\windows\system32 (Enter)

Hmmm, you asked for Rpcss.exe, the Windows disks only has the rpcss.dll.
This file is stored in the \i386 folder of the Windows SP2 CD and also in
the DLL cache folder. If the original dll is broken Windows replaces the
damaged file from the Windows cache.

XP does not use cab files. All the components are in the CD's \i386
folder in compressed form, indicated by the final character being
changed to _ - as dl_ or ex_ So select whichever and expand it to the
dll or exe - usually in windows\system32

HOW TO RESTORE RPCSS.DLL FROM WINDOWS CD:

If I may add a little just to be more clear for those of us that need a little more detail;

As noted above, from a command line (START RUN CMD ENTER)
Switch to the CD, by entering D: <return> for your CD drive if you have your windows disk in your D: drive,

{If you can not or do not have a "start" button due to the RPCSS issue, try opening any folder on your desktop which will hopefully open windows explorer [opens the folder] - At the top of the new folder you opened in the address line, change this to say C:\Windows\system32 (enter) - once there you should be able to scroll down and find the file named "CMD" double click it or select it and hit enter. This will open a DOS prompt}

to extract the RPCSS.DLL to your C: Drive

the commands from a DOS prompt, on the D: drive would be:

expand(space)d:\I386\rpcss.dl_(space)C:\windows\system32\rpcss.dll (Enter)
