Using Headings in an Index

Hello

I've been asked to create an Index from the headings in a document. The only
heading styles used are Heading 1 and Heading 2. Is there a quick way to
select all headings as an Index, or do I have to mark each one individually?

Any advice would be welcomed.

Well, if you're making something out of headings, it's probably a TOC (table
of contents) rather than an index, and Word will do this for you
automatically. See http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html

Thank you Suzanne, I should have said this before, I've been asked to do a
TOC and an Index of the same headings, I just wondered if there was a quick
way of creating an Index from a TOC, or whether it's possible to pick up the
Heading Styles to avoid marking each one.

I'm not sure I see the point of making an index this way, and no, if you
want to create an INDEX field, you'll have to insert the XE (index entry)
fields to generate it. You could, however, fake it. Insert a second TOC at
the end. When editing is complete (so that pagination will not change),
unlink it (Ctrl+Shift+F9) to convert it to plain text and sort it
alphabetically using Table | Sort.
