Using embedded link in full screen slide show mode

If you have a PPT that you're showing in full screen slide show mode (using a
projector) it seems not possible to embed a link to another document
(spreadsheet, word document, etc.) ... - or at least I don't know how to do
it. I have to move to normal viewing mode to launch the embedded document.
Is there a workaround for this so that I can remain in full screen slide show
mode (and come back to this state automatically when closing the embedded
document) ?

Is it possible that the document opens, but the window is under the PowerPoint
window and cannot be seen? Press Alt + Tab to see what tasks are open.
