Using Dialing Rules when Sending Faxes in Outlook 2003

Hi,

I currently use Windows XP SP1 with Outlook 2003 and Microsoft Fax Service
(I also have WinFax 10 installed but don't really use it and think I might
just uninstall it). I'm wondering if there is a way to use Dialing Rules
when sending a fax from Outlook 2003. I have two locations set up (home and
home w/calling card) and would like to sometimes be able to send the fax
from the home w/calling card location so that I can use the calling card and
not end up paying for long distance. Anyone have any idea how to do this?

the Windows XP Fax service will not process dialing rules unless the phone
number to which you are sending the fax is in "international format."

If your Calling card settings are part of the per-user settings, you're out
of luck with Windows XP Fax. The XP Fax Service can only run under the
System account, so per-user settings are not available to it.

Thanks for the reply. I was using the correct "international format" to
send the fax, but you kind of lost me regarding per-user settings vs. system
account settings. Can you explain what you meant by that?

Also, if there is no way to have faxes sent from Outlook using Microsoft Fax
Service choose between two different locations using Dialing Rules, is there
any way to insert pauses in the phone number so that I could dial the entire
calling card before the fax number (i.e.
[fax:14043453535PPP777777777#PPP14449045353] where 14043453535 is the
calling card number, PPP are for pausing, 777777777# is the PIN number and
the # after entering the PIN number, and 14449045353 is the number I'm
trying to call, or something similar to this that allows pauses)??

Here's the problem you may be seeing and a solution for Windows 2000 that is
NOT a solution for Windows XP because the XP Fax Service can only run under
the System account:

Here is where I'm getting confused.

From what I understand of what you're saying, per-user settings such as
calling cards and other settings that are input in dialing rules cannot be
used with the Fax Service and while there was a work-around to use these in
Windows 2000 there is no longer any work-around to use them in Windows XP.
However, if I attempt to send a fax from the fax console, there is a wizard
that guides me through sending the fax, and in that wizard I can change the
dialing rules location to one in which I've set up a calling card, and then
the fax actually dials the calling card first. Therefore, I'm wondering if
there is any way this can be accomplished when sending a fax using Outlook.
If not, is there any way to input pauses in the fax number within Outlook?

Also, just out of curiosity, what do you use to track, read, and respond to
newsgroup messages? I am currently using Outlook Express, but its a bit
difficult to use it to track my sent messages for replies so I know when my
questions have been responded to. Do you have something that might work
better for this? The perfect solution for me would be something that would
email me when a reply has been posted to one of my messages...any ideas?

Pauses are easy it insert, use a comma wherever you want a 2 second pause
(10 seconds would be 5 commas - ,,,,,).

Anyone have any ideas why you can use different dialing rules locations when
sending faxes through the Microsoft Fax Console but not when you send them
via Outlook...or is there some way that I am just missing? Thanks!

You're not missing a thing, that's how it works. You can do it from the Fax
Console, but not from Outlook for the reasons I gave. XP Fax has a number
of shortcomings, as you're discovering. One of them is less integration
with Outlook than earlier Microsoft fax systems provided; another is lack of
Distinctive Ring support (see the Slipstick.com link I posted). Anything
you might be able to do in the form of suggestions to Microsoft about fixing
these shortcomings would be richly welcome by MANY folks.
