using comments

New user here so I apologize if this has been answered somewhere that i have
not yet found. In XP one could add comments that meant something to the user
about the file. It is available but most all files don't present a "summary"
tab as was available in XP. In Vista SP1 how does one access the function to
save a comment about the file .- I copied most of my files from the old
desktop where most/many had the comments even *.pdf files.-
thank you for your help

Right-click on the file in Explorer, choose Properties and select the
Details Tab. You can add comments there...

Please tell us the version of the application you are asking about,
your OS, Service Pack level
and the FULL contents of any error message(s)
Most often the details tab is completely filled in. Where File Description
of some is not filled in, even if i try right cliking or left cliking no
field becomes available to type anything into it.

At the bar of a window there are columns labelled FileName; Size; Type; etc
one can add another column called Comments. In Xp after cliking Properties on
a file one could type in info about the file. I have the Comments column
available but cannot find how to type info into because it does not appear
when you clik on Properties.
So are we talking of the same thing?

thanks
Gail

On the Details Tab, click just to the right of Comments: A box appears to
type in your Comments. These Comments appear in Windows Explorer when you
enable the Comments column.
So there's two stages - enable the Comments Column in WE and
right-click-properties-details on the file.

Well I did the first stage and the comments that carried over from XP were
there. I can edit them in a window that appears below the directory and
filename panes. If I click on Properties|Details there is nothing there
called Comments that I can edit. It seems there are certain filenames that
will not allow comments. so far I have identified those to be *.rtf; *.pdf

another annoyance is that every filename pane in Windows Explorer must have
the Comments column added. Is there any way to have the Comments column added
to every filename pane of all directories?

thanks for your help
Gail
